Rent receipt template for Nigeria
A rent receipt is the landlord's written confirmation that a tenant has paid — how much, for what, and for which period. Download this template free, in Word or PDF, with no sign-up. It's laid out for naira amounts and yearly rent periods, with space to write the amount in words.
What to put on a rent receipt
- Who issued it
- The landlord's or agent's name, address and phone number, so the tenant knows who received the money.
- Receipt number and date
- A unique number for every receipt, in sequence, and the date the money was received — not the date the rent was due.
- Who paid
- The tenant's full name as it appears on the tenancy agreement.
- Property and unit
- The full address and the flat or unit, so a receipt can't be confused with one for another property.
- Amount in figures and in words
- Write it both ways, for example ₦1,800,000 and "One million, eight hundred thousand naira only". Words are much harder to alter than figures.
- What the payment is for
- Rent, service charge, caution deposit, agency fee or legal fee. Itemise each one, so a refundable caution deposit is never mistaken for rent.
- The period it covers
- The exact start and end dates. With yearly rent, this is the line that settles when the next payment is due.
- How it was paid
- Bank transfer, cash, POS or cheque, with the transfer reference or cheque number if there is one.
- Balance outstanding
- If the payment was partial, what is still owed — written down on the day, not remembered later.
- Signature
- The name and signature of the person who received the money, and optionally the tenant's.

Habits that keep receipts useful
- Issue the receipt the day the money arrives, while the details are certain.
- Number receipts in order and never reuse a number, so a missing one stands out.
- Keep your own copy of every receipt — a photo is better than nothing.
- Match each receipt to its bank transfer, so the two records agree.
- Pair receipts with a clear rent invoice before payment is due — see how to generate professional rent invoices and how to keep proper rental records.
Questions landlords ask
What should a rent receipt in Nigeria include?
The landlord's or agent's details, a receipt number and date, the tenant's name, the property and unit, the amount in figures and in words, what the payment is for, the period it covers, how it was paid, any balance outstanding, and the signature of the person who received the money.
What is the difference between a rent invoice and a rent receipt?
An invoice asks for payment: it says what is owed and when it is due. A receipt confirms payment: it is issued after the money arrives and records exactly what was received, for what, and for which period.
Should I give a receipt for a part payment?
Yes. Issue a receipt for every payment you receive, including part payments, and write the balance still outstanding on it. That way both you and the tenant have the same record of what has been paid.
Can a caution deposit or agency fee go on the same receipt as rent?
It can, as long as each amount is listed separately. A caution deposit is usually refundable and an agency fee usually isn't, so keeping them apart from rent avoids disputes when the tenancy ends.
General guidance, not legal advice. For a dispute, speak to a lawyer.
Done writing receipts by hand?
